Maverick traces to Samuel Augustus Maverick, a Texas land baron and politician whose unbranded herd gave the word its meaning: strays with no owner’s mark became known as “mavericks”. The name’s first US records coincide with ABC’s Western series Maverick (1957), with James Garner as Bret Maverick. Use more than doubled the year after Top Gun (1986), in which Tom Cruise plays the pilot Pete “Maverick” Mitchell.
